International Women’s Day – Spotlight on Caterina Scorsone

Happy International Women’s Day to all the amazing, strong women out there! There is one I’d especially like to focus on, though—someone I admire so much and who means a lot to me: Caterina Scorsone, who plays Amelia Shepherd on Grey’s Anatomy.

Her advocacy and the way she speaks out about important issues means so much to me. The way she advocates for her daughter Pippa, who has Down syndrome, shows just how incredible of a mom she is.

As someone who has ADHD, a learning disability, generalized anxiety, a bit of depression, and PTSD, it means a lot to me that she advocates not only for people with Down syndrome but for the disability community in general. One of my favorite things is watching and reading her interviews because she is so well spoken. Caterina speaks out about important issues more than most people do. Not only does she advocate for those with disabilities, but she is also a strong advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, and I love that about her. She has also spoken openly about grief and many other important topics. She is truly amazing.

Recently, she traveled to Washington, DC with the Global Down Syndrome Foundation to speak with Congress about passing the DeOndra Dixon INCLUDE Project Act. It’s so important that this gets passed, as it would advance research to improve health outcomes for people with Down syndrome and conditions such as Alzheimer’s, leukemia, and congenital heart defects. The act is named in honor of Jamie Foxx’s sister, DeOndra.

The fact that Caterina spoke on behalf of this means a lot to me. My mom passed away on April 12, 2025 from early-onset Alzheimer’s. She was only 64. My mom LOVED Greys Anatomy. She was a Medical Technologist for 30+ years. As her caregiver Greys was the only thing that kept my mom in bed, it kept her relaxed so Greys means so much to me! Caterina has said before that she loves to read about Alzheimer’s research, and I appreciate that more than I can say.

Caterina — if you ever see this, I want you to know that you are an amazing person. You’re an incredible mom, and your girls are so lucky to have you. I appreciate everything you stand for. The work you are doing means so much to me. I only wish there were more ways I could help.
